Print Quotas

1. About your printer account balance

Your print balance is the number of printer pages remaining in your account.   If your balance is 17, for example, you can print 17 pages.

A page means one physical sheet of paper.

Your print balance applies ONLY to these laser printers:

  • Radek ..... Seaton 54 college computer lab
  • Franklin... Fiedler 1092 college computer lab
  • Borzoi..... Fiedler Learning Commons

When you print to one of these printers, our software first counts the number of pages in your request, and then looks at your print balance. If your print balance is large enough to print all the pages, your print request will be accepted and your job will be printed. If your print balance is insufficient, your print request will be refused.

Your print balance is debited by 1 for each physical page you print, whether you print on one side or both sides of a page. If you print a 10-page document single-sided, your balance decreases by 10. Printing the same 10-page document double-sided (on 5 physical pages) would decrease your balance by 5.

Your print balance will not be affected when you print to any other printer, plotter or graphics output device. It applies only to the specific printers listed above.

2. How to check your current print balance

Rest your mouse cursor on the dollar sign ($) symbol  in the notification area of the task bar. In about 1 second, a small text balloon will appear which shows your print balance. If you prefer, you may double-click on the dollar sign symbol to display your print balance in a large message window centered in the screen.

3. How we update your print balance every week

Every Friday at about 6 a.m. we add 30 free pages to your print balance. If your old print balance was 7 pages, your new print balance would be 37 pages.

Your print balance also has a maximum limit of 150 pages. If your old print balance was 130 pages, your new print balance would be 150 (not 160) after the update.

New students are given 30 pages when their account is created. They will then receive the normal 30 pages on every Friday morning.

NOTES:
The maximum print balance was increased from 60 to 80 on 19 January 2007, and was increased to 100 pages on 13 June 2012. It was increased to 150 pages on 15 May 2015.
The weekly print balance update amount was increased from 25 to 30 pages on 13 June 2012.

4. Extra end-of-semester copies

This policy was discontinued following the completion of the Spring 2015 semester. Additional maximum print balance was given to allow people to save more copies instead.

We know that near the end of the semester you may need to do more printing than usual.

During the last three weeks of Spring and Fall semesters, we increase the number of pages added to your account balance each week. We add 45 pages (instead of the usual 30) each week.

On the last Friday of finals week (the last day of the semester) we return to our regular policy of adding 30 pages per week.

5. What if you don't have enough copies?

If you don't have enough copies:

  • If you can defer your printing until after the next free update on Friday morning, your new print balance may be enough to let you print what you need.
  • If a PDF would work for you instead of printing on paper, you can select "Adobe PDF" as the target printer and "print" to it.  The pages that would have been printed are instead turned into a Portable Document Format (.pdf) file.  And of course, this "printing" is not charged against your account balance.

  • Kansas State University provides a limited amount of free printing to every student, on printers located in their computer labs and in Hale Library.  If you exhaust your free copies, you can use funds on a K-State Wildcat Card to purchase additional copies.   Learn more
  • Most departments in the College of Engineering provide free printing on departmental printers to students in the department.  Please check with your department for details.

6. What if you have a problem with poor-quality printing, or with your account balance?

If you have a problem, please let us know.

  • Bad copies? We can credit your account for any poor-quality copies.
  • Does your account balance seem too low? We will review your account balance transactions with you to resolve any questions.
